As professional recruiters, we do not recommend that prospective candidates do this as many client companies are more hesitant about the real “why” behind someone leaving a job without having another one. It definitely adds another element or potential hurdle to marketing a candidate to a hiring manager, and staying employed (provided that it is a tolerable situation) gives them one less reason to exclude a candidate and can increase the odds of getting what may be an ideal, new job.
